The right Republican can win the Massachusetts U.S. Senate race by exploiting a rare convergence of structural and candidate specific vulnerabilities: Ed Markey turns age 80 in July and has already drawn intraparty chatter about his 50-year tenure in DC, showing softness rather than dominance. Meanwhile, GOP Senate nominees have held the Republican

Former GOP Governor Charlie Baker still maintains a 58% favorability (27% unfav). In contrast, Senator Ed Markey’s image is net 20-points more negative (47 fav, 36 unfav). Only 40% of voters initially say they are definitely voting for Markey against John Deaton.

           The Messages Work

After voters are exposed to Deaton’s biography – both good and bad – his unique issue platform, and Markey’s failures, the U.S. Senate race moves from 30 – 54 (D+24) to 40 – 45 (D+5) with 15% undecided. Importantly, these undecided voters are frustrated with the status quo and would be more likely to vote for Deaton out of protest than support the incumbent.

Non-college voters moved strongly to Deaton on the informed ballot. What’s more surprising is that the largest group that abandoned Markey and embraced Deaton are women, including college-educated women. In all my years of polling, I’ve not experienced a shift of this demographic toward a Republican, which shows something unique about Deaton.

With Markey and Seth Moulton engaged in a heated Democratic primary, Deaton has a head start opportunity to introduce himself to voters, particularly with his Poverty to Marines story. He also must talk about key portions of his policy platform, including health insurance, affordability,

Boston, MA – John Deaton is leading a group of Massachusetts taxpayers in filing a lawsuit under M.G.L. c. 29, § 63 to prevent the unlawful expenditure of public funds by the Massachusetts Legislature. The action seeks to compel the Legislature to comply with the 2024 voter-approved mandate, passed by 72% of voters, granting the State Auditor authority to audit legislative operations.

Deaton’s targeted "financial freeze" is designed to impact the political leadership and bureaucratic machinery of the state until the Legislature opens its books and respects the will of the voters, while strictly protecting the essential benefits relied upon by seniors, children, and low-income families.

Governor Healey and the Legislature recently authorized $750 million to “match” federal grants from the IIJA (Infrastructure), IRA (Green Energy), and CHIPS Act. Deaton and his group of taxpayers propose that the federal government pause all new approvals for Massachusetts-led discretionary grant applications. This forces the Governor and Legislature to choose between their secrecy and their ability to secure billions in “legacy-building” projects.

Deaton explained, “For over a year, Beacon Hill has ignored the democratic will of the people, hiding behind vague claims of 'unconstitutionality' to avoid a state audit,”

Deaton concluded, “If the state legislature refuses to honor the transparency laws passed by the voters, they have proven they cannot be trusted to oversee billions in federal taxpayer dollars. We are asking the federal government to stop the ‘perks’ of state government until the books are opened.”

The lawsuit was jointly filed by John Deaton, himself, a Massachusetts lawyer, and by independent counsel, Michael Walsh. The Plaintiffs are committed to seeing the process through to restore accountability. This effort, led by John Deaton, underscores a simple principle: Government works for the people, and the people's will must be honored without hurting the families who need help the most. This non-partisan initiative focuses solely on enforcing the 2024 ballot mandate for legislative audits while protecting essential support for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable residents.

Bolton, MA — Today, veteran, attorney and reform-champion John Deaton formally announced that he is injecting $1 million of his own personal funds into his campaign to become United States Senator from Massachusetts, signalling his readiness to lead and win for the Commonwealth’s Republicans.

“Massachusetts working families deserve bold, independent leadership that doesn’t wait for permission,” Deaton said. “I’m stepping up — and I’m putting my own skin in the game. This state, this nation, can’t afford business-as-usual Washington. I’m all-in.”

With this self-investment, Deaton brings immediate momentum and organizational strength to his campaign. This significant personal financial commitment underscores several key attributes of Deaton’s campaign:

Confidence in Victory: Deaton’s personal investment sends a clear signal that he believes he can win the general election, not just compete.

Independence: By putting his own money in, he underscores his promise to stand up to special interests and not be beholden to big‐donors or Washington insiders.

Momentum: The infusion of early capital will help accelerate digital advertising, grassroots outreach, and building a statewide ground game — giving Deaton a strategic advantage as the race takes shape.

“Serving in the Marines taught me that leadership means showing up and doing the hard work. Building a law-practice taught me you fight for the underdog and you don’t back down. Now I’m ready to bring that same energy to the U.S. Senate,” Deaton said.

It’s take two for John Deaton.

After the Republican candidate tried to unseat U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren last year, Deaton now has his sights on

Deaton, 58, officially launched his 2026 campaign on Monday evening in Worcester — becoming the first Republican to announce a Senate run for next year.

           On the Democratic side,

Congressman Seth Moulton is challenging Markey

            in the primary.

Deaton — a Marine veteran, attorney, and small business owner — focused on affordability and targeting “career politicians” in his launch video on the eve of Veterans Day.

“Our Commonwealth is headed down the wrong path,” Deaton says in the video. “Families here are struggling as home prices, energy costs and grocery bills continue to rise.

“Our leaders should be doing their jobs to help Massachusetts families, but they’re all career politicians and they’re failing,” he adds, showing clips of Markey, Warren and Moulton.

In Moulton’s recent campaign launch, the congressman emphasized Markey’s age and long time in Congress. Markey will be 80 years old next year.

Deaton also went after Markey for his nearly 50 years in office.

“Ed Markey is MIA, rarely seen here, and rarely delivering results in Washington, a place he’s called home since the 70s,” Deaton says. “Massachusetts can do better.”

Deaton’s website says he would fight for term limits in Congress.

Last year, he cruised in the Republican Senate primary. He received more than 64% of the vote, compared to Robert Antonellis receiving about 26% and Ian Cain’s 9%.

Then in the 2024 general election, Warren handily defeated Deaton — nearly 60% for Warren compared to 40% for Deaton.

In his launch video, Deaton said he “started with nothing, a broken home, battling poverty and violence, living on food stamps.”

Then after the Marines, he earned a degree and “built a business from the ground up with grit, determination and hard work.”

“Our leaders should reflect us,” he added. “They should face down challenges with the same grit, overcome obstacles with our same determination. Most of all, be an independent voice for Massachusetts.”

The campaign launch video ends with him playing with his daughter at a playground.

Deaton’s campaign will focus on restoring accountability in Washington, addressing the affordability crisis, and standing up for working families across the Commonwealth.

“I’ve lived the challenges many Massachusetts families face,” Deaton said. “I grew up with nothing, worked my way through the Marines, earned my degree, and built a business from the ground up. I know what it means to fight through obstacles and get results. That is what’s missing in Washington, and that is why I’m running.”
