BOSTON, MA — U.S. Senate candidate John Deaton today criticized Sen. Ed Markey for staying silent as Gov. Maura Healey signed a 20-year sales and use tax exemption for qualified data centers, a 2024 incentive tied to a $50 million investment threshold.
“Governor Healey gave data centers a 20-year tax break, and Senator Markey said nothing,” Deaton said. “Massachusetts families already pay some of the highest electricity rates in the country. Corporate operators get the deal. Ratepayers get the bill.”
The exemption remains on the books even after Healey later paused applications amid concerns over energy costs, water use, and community impact. Eligibility includes at least 100,000 square feet of space, 100 Massachusetts jobs within five years, and $50 million in qualified costs within 10 years.
Deaton said he supports technology, not one-sided giveaways. Developers should bring their own power, pay for infrastructure, and win real local consent.
“After 50 years in Washington, Markey was silent when it counted,” Deaton said. “Massachusetts needs a senator who puts working families first.”
