Call Comes After State Legislature Nixes Gas Tax Cut

BOLTON, MA -- Massachusetts U.S. Senate candidate John Deaton renewed his call for senators to return to Washington and pass a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax, which is 18.4 cents per gallon of gas and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel.

His advocacy comes one day after the Massachusetts Legislature stripped a provision introduced by Governor Maura Healey that would have temporarily suspended the state gas tax of 24 cents per gallon. Republicans, led by Rep. Todd Smola, attempted to keep the gas tax cut alive with their own provision, which House Democratic leadership also killed.

"Residents are hurting, and the fact that state lawmakers withdrew this measure means they feel so confident about not being punished by the voters that they are content with rubbing salt in the wound before Election Day," said Deaton. "Meanwhile, Senator Markey is silent about providing federal gas tax relief because he hasn't been told what to do by the other progressives in our state's delegation. That's not leadership, and it doesn't warrant reelection."
